Lanark is nestled in a bend of the River Clyde,
a mere 75 miles north of Carlisle. Holding a strategic position
at the head of Clydesdale, it was one of the most important strongholds
of the English army in Scotland, as it secured the main supply route
via Annandale north to Stirling.
Today, it is easily reached from the M74 motorway,
from either Junction 9 or Junction 12 depending on your direction
of approach - click
